چکیده

I Five years ago, at this Svmposium. E. L. Tatum I , u , L and J. Lederberg first reported some preliminary experiments on genetic recombination in Escherichia coli K-12 (1946). This report will review subsequent developments in this research, with special emphasis on the application of recombination analysis in bacteria to problems of general genetic interest. The standard textbooks of bacteriology have emphasized simple fission to the near exclusion of other modes of bacterial reproduction. This is not surprising in view of the confusing aggregate of conflicting and unconfirmed claims of morphological observations interpreted as sexual processes (reviewed by Bisset, 1950). More authoritative claims of bacterial fusion have appeared (Braun and Elrod, 1946; Stempen and Hutchinson, 19511 but none with the essential \ concurrence of genetic investigation. On the

Recombination and nucleotide diversity in the sex chromosomal pseudoautosomal region of the emu, Dromaius novaehollandiae.

Pseudoautosomal regions (PARs) shared by avian Z and W sex chromosomes are typically small homologous regions within which recombination still occurs and are hypothesized to share the properties of autosomes. We capitalized on the unusual structure of the sex chromosomes of emus, Dromaius novaehollandiae, which consist almost entirely of PAR shared by both sex chromosomes, to test this hypothes...

First evidence of higher female recombination in a species with temperature-dependent sex determination: the saltwater crocodile.

The first evidence of genetic linkage and sex-specific recombination in the order Crocodylia is reported. This study was conducted using a resource pedigree of saltwater crocodiles consisting of 16 known-breeding pairs (32 adults) and 101 juveniles. A total of 21 microsatellite loci were available for analysis. Ten of the 21 loci showed linkage with 4 linkage groups: 3 pairwise (Cj131/Cj127, CU...

Meiotic Recombination: The Essence of Heredity.

The study of homologous recombination has its historical roots in meiosis. In this context, recombination occurs as a programmed event that culminates in the formation of crossovers, which are essential for accurate chromosome segregation and create new combinations of parental alleles. Thus, meiotic recombination underlies both the independent assortment of parental chromosomes and genetic lin...

Tetrad analysis in higher plants. A budding technology.

Tetrad analysis, the ability to manipulate and individually study the four products of a single meiotic event, has been critical to understanding the mechanisms of heredity. The Arabidopsis quartet (qrt) mutation, which causes the four products of male meiosis to remain attached, enables plant biologists to apply this powerful tool to investigations of gamete development, cell division, chromos...

Functions of homologous DNA recombination

Homologous DNA (or genetic) recombination plays important roles in heredity and evolution. A recent study has shown that a physical linkage established by recombination between two or more homologous DNA regions or molecules is essential for the precise disjunction of homologous chromosomes in meiosis and the recovery of collapsed DNA replication forks. These physical linkages in recombination ...
